Dr. Schmalzried is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in hip arthritis, knee arthritis, and arthritis surgery. Attending Stanford on a basketball scholarship, he majored in Human Biology, and went to UCLA for medical school, internship, and residency. Dr. Schmalzried then had sub-specialty training in joint replacement at Harvard and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

In over 30 years of practice, he has performed thousands of procedures including hip resurfacings, total hip replacements, revision total hip replacements, uni-compartmental (partial) knee replacements, total knee replacements, and revision total knee replacements. In addition, Dr. Schmalzried has authored over 170 peer-reviewed scientific publications, winning multiple national research awards. The topics include infection, dislocation, nerve injury/palsy, loosening, wear, osteolysis, corrosion, metallosis, metal sensitivity, allergy, and mechanisms of failure of joint arthroplasties.

Dr. Schmalzried has provided expert opinion or testified as an expert in medical malpractice, personal injury, and product liability cases, on behalf of plaintiffs and in defense. His clients include patients, surgeons, surgery centers and hospitals, Zimmer, Biomet, Smith-Nephew, Stryker, and The United States of America.
